“Just change
‘believing’ to ‘believed’, ‘assuming’ to ‘assumed’, and ‘thinking’ to ‘thinked.’ Oh no!
Don’t tell the writing center, I’ll get fired.” --Miriam

Retreat
Reflections: We just
returned from the HC Spring Retreat filled with good food from Silk
Cuisine, the bookstore, and the amazing John Francone! Unfortunately,
the meeting house had been double-booked with MIDDLESCHOOLERS...yikes! Needless to say, we slept in the Women’s
Center. Steve commended our effective use of time. Liz praised Jesse Littlewood
’03 for an amazing diversity training. Callie
appreciated Louise Tritton’s helpful consensus training, and former
members were grateful that she made this training so applicable to council.
(Welcome back Tommy T. from Florida. We hope you enjoyed the sun while we froze in Philly.)
III.
Carrie and Liz volunteered to redo the
council bulletin board. Portraits will
be taken next weekend at our regular meeting.
Ben kindly offered us his digital camera so that we can use the
pictures on the web. Stay tuned for web
updates.
IV. Plenary
is Sunday February 16! Mary thoughtfully
reminded us that “EVERYONE MUST BE THERE!”
V.
Dedicated
Community member, Matt Kearney, brought his concerns about the wording
and place of Student Facilitated Panels in the Code. Mary and other council members
expressed their frustration with the practicality of SFPs. SFPs call for students with mediation
training which can only be obtained by weeks of training. There is currently no one on council who has
been properly trained at the level the mediator we spoke with recommended as
minimal for effective mediation. Matt
decided not to present a resolution eliminating SFPs, but we appreciate his
Efforts.
Disclaimer: These minutes reflect the views of
Miriam and Liz, who are exhausted from the fatigue they endured while ‘Storming
the Election’ and the muscle strain they experienced while ‘Pulling the
Secretary Maneuver.’ Therefore, these
minutes cannot be expected to be either cogent or coherent, much less
reflective of the views of Haverford College. If you have any
