III.           Honor Council Orientation: Public Portion

Co-chairs Steve and Mary explained the structure of HC meetings that there is a public portion in which any member of the community can voice opinions or just listen, and a confidential portion open to HC representatives.  They also mentioned that JSAAPP needs two HC representatives- as of yet there are no takers.  Jesse then briefly discussed trials and explained the different types of juries, including those for academic trials (6 HC members/6 community members), joint panels (2 deans/2 HC members/4 community members) and student facilitated panels (SFP- composed of HC members and community members).  Steve and Mary asked about the possibility of having an HC retreat this coming weekend, and a tentative date was set for Saturday, Sept. 21.  Dave asked about junior and senior elections for the empty spots; both will be held Tuesday night in Sharpless.  Jesse then raised the point about the need for more thorough guidelines in deans' panels, and discussed the possibility of creating a subcommittee for that purpose.  The HC members present decided they would wait until they had a full council to create subcommittees.
