Haverford's Men Against Sexual Assault and Rape (M.A.S.A.R.) is a group of men dedicated to making rape and sexual assault not only a women's issue, but a men's issue as well. We believe that men can stop rape, but that before that goal can be achieved, we must educate ourselves and our friends about what we as individuals can do. We must not only be "anti-rape", but we must also "do" anti-rape.
The Men's Center M.A.S.A.R. is currently in the process of starting a men's center in reaction to and support of our work with issues of rape and sexual assault. The longer we have been involved in this work, the more we have seen that traditional definitions of masculinity are the root of the problem of men's violence (particularly towards women but also towards other men). It is our hope that The Men's Center will become a place where men can challenge the current definitions of masculinity and begin to form new definitions. We are garnering support for the development of this center by sponsoring all-male discussion groups made up of both students and faculty members centered around the topic of masculinity. Expanding to the Haverford, PA Community M.A.S.A.R. has begun looking at ways to take our message beyond the Haverford College community. We're specifically looking to work with high schools in the area to run workshops for young men discussing masculinity and sexual assault.
