- Will thanked everyone for making Plenary a huge success.
- David and Kristen from the AAC came and spoke about how they
are making a recommendations regarding the allocation of resources
and budgeting. Will spoke about the necessity for SC to have more
money in order to have an annual big event. Scott said that another
alternative may be to increase Amy Hams budget to have one
large event. Will is suspicious about whether or not the SC budget
increases with tuition. There is a call for a 5.9% in tuition
this year. Is construction of the athletic facility going to affect
the Ira D Reid house as a living space and black cultural center?
Will asked about Leeds certification for the athletic center.
Heidi asked about what can be done for the current athletes, new
equipment, and new floor surface. It is projected that the Financial
Aid portion of the budget is 27.8%. Davids main concern
is that the phonathon should not call alumni who graduated only
one or two years ago because they get very upset. He also thinks
that we should get new safety vehicles that are smaller and do
not use as much gas- possibly hybrid cars. Letter about all this
is posted on the comment board so if you have suggestions, please
see the comment board. Next AAC meeting is in August.
- Committee Reports
- Activities- Jon thanked everyone for helping with the dance.
Meeting tonight at 9 in Campus Center. Another dance this Saturday
night in Founders from 11pm-3 am- 80s theme. GET DRESSED
UP!! Volunteers to set up and clean up.
- The official final budgets have been released and are on the
web-page. No reports from the appointments committees.
- Scott spoke about the Mighty-Mighty Bosstones and that Tracey
Morgan denied SCs bid for $18,500 to perform at Haverford.
Bryn Mawr is having a big formal so attendance might have been
lower anyways. Suggestions for spending the surplus? Diandra suggested
that Aaron Karo should come and do a comedy act here. Scott shared
that the money could be used for lights allowing for concerts
in the DC and that a new sound-system will be needed for next
year. Will mentioned that a big-event is most likely out of the
purchase. Beth spoke about bringing American Idol
to campus so that up to 30 students could audition, and the winner
would receiver a cash-prize and go for a regional competition
for the chance to record free CDs. Diandra and Camille added
that it would be a good idea so that everyone would know someone
performing. Amelia suggested that leftover money should go to
the weight room. Andrew suggested that we get newspapers.
- Board approved the budget for 2004. Haverfords money is
index funds. We have a policy that we will not invest money in
tobacco or military defense companies but 2% of these index funds
has these types of companies. Instead of getting rid of the index
funds, we are going to sell short the amount of stock we own in
tobacco and defense. Next year is smallest salary pool and is
leaning to the side of too many students. Integrated athletic
building is estimated to cost 28 million and should be done in
winter of 2005.
- Dorm Rep Thoughts- Tess said people were wondering why washing
machine prices went up and Lauren suggested that you read the
sign on the door of the laundry room. Lack of recycling bins in
Gummere. Camille said that soda machines in Leeds and Lloyd are
empty. Lauren said that the machines have been getting replaced.
Janine said that windows in HCA are drafty so people have been
turning up the thermostat so it gets hot. James said that people
have been very happy with the Lunt concerts this semester.
